N139m Fraud: Former NIMASA DG, Calistus Obi, Other Convicted

By Francis Iwuchukwu, Lagos

A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos State, Nigeria, presided over by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun on Thursday (today) convicted the former acting Director General (DG) of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Calistus Obi and Alu Dismas.

Dismas was the Personal Assistant (PA) to Obi's predecessor, Patrick Akpobolokemi.

They were convicted for converting N139m belonging to NIMASA to their personal use.

The judge thereafter adjourned till May 28, 2019 for sentencing, even as she ordered that the convicted former NIMASA officials be remanded in prison custody.

It would be recalled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commisson (EFCC) had arraigned Obi and his co-conspirators in 2016 for conspiracy, conversion and money laundering to the tune of  N136 million.

Obi was dragged to court alongside Dismas on an eight count charge of conspiracy and money laundering.

Even though Justice Olatoregun discharged and acquitted the defendants of conspiracy over the failure of the Commission to judiciously prove conspiracy, the court however convicted the defendants of conversion and money laundering.
