Reps Election: Petition Questioning Faleke's Victory Thrown Out

By Francis Iwuchukwu, Lagos

The application confronting  James Abiodun Faleke’s victory in the House of Representatives election of February 23, 2019, was today (Friday) struck out by the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria.

It would be recalled that Faleke who contested under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is the member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the lower legislative chamber of the National Assembly.

The Tribunal, presided over by Justice Kunaza M. Hamidu threw out the application consequent upon a motion by the petitioner, Mutiu Olakunle Okunola, to withdraw his application.

Okunola had contested the election against Faleke on May 23, 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic party, PDP.

He had specifically dragged Faleke, APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, before the tribunal, praying for a reversal of Faleke’s victory and a declaration that he was the rightful winner of the election.

But Okunola had recently defected to the APC.

During today's sitting of the Tribunal, Okunola's lawyer had informed the panel that his client had decided to withdraw the application against all the respondents.
