Forfeited N12.2bn: Patience Jonathan Heads To Appeal Court

By Francis Iwuchukwu, Lagos

Patience Jonathan, wife of the former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday (today) headed to the Lagos division of the Court of Appeal sitting in Igbosere, Nigeria, to challenge the judgment of Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos State, Nigeria, which ordered the final forfeiture of a sum to the tune of N12.2billion to the Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN, belonging to her.

Specifically, the former first lady is asking the appellate court to set aside the judgment of Justice Olatoregun.

Mrs. Jonathan particularly insisted through her lawyer that the judge erred in law by ordering the final forfeiture when she had no jurisdiction to do so.

It would be recalled that Justice Olatoregun had on Monday ruled on an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, requesting for an order of forfeiture of $8.4million (about N3.030billion) and N9.2billion found in her companies’ accounts.

The judge had equally declared that the funds were proceeds of unlawful activities.
