LION WESLEY O. KAFIDIYA

By Francis Iwuchukwu, Lagos

BEING A SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR, LION WESLEY O. KAFIDIYA, MJF, NLCF, DISTRICT 404B-2 NIGERIA AT THE MEDIA CONFERENCE HELD ON FRIDAY, 12TH JULY 2019 AT THE LIONS CLUB SECRETARIAT, 274, HERBERT MACAULAY WAY, YABA, LAGOS STATE.

INTRODUCTION:

I welcome you all my amiable Cabinet Officers and indeed all you gentlemen of the press to this media conference; to brief you all of our activities lined up for the Lions Service Year 2019/2020 and also to discuss our Core project for the year.

For the benefit of those of us non-Lions among us, you are welcome to the Association of Lions Clubs International, District 404B2 Nigeria.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest philanthropic organization, committed to providing services to the less privileged people within the society.

It was founded in the year 1917 by Melvin Jones in the United States of America, and today has a membership of more than 1,400,000 (one million four hundred thousand) people in more than 45,000 clubs spread across 190 countries of the world.

The District 404B-2 Nigeria is one of the 4 districts in the Lions Clubs International Multiple District 404 Nigeria.

I, Lion Wesley O. Kafidiya was elected the District Governor, at the National Convention held in Abeokuta, Ogun State in May 2019 to steer the ship of District 404B-2 of the Multiple District 404 Nigeria for the Lions year which commenced on 1st July 2019.

THEME
The theme for the year shall be ‘We Serve With Love’.

We serve all people in all places. Lions are a shining example to the world of the good that can be accomplished by uniting in harmony.

We are known for our strength and ability to help others—and this is only accomplished Through Diversity”.

Diversity Bridges All Divides. Lions Serve the World.

Strengthening our Communities through Diversity.

Diversity is more than a defining characteristic for Lions. It is also the key to success. ‘We Serve With Love’ by‘  intentionally putting the needs of others before our own with care and compassion’.

Service to others is akin to duty, the fulfillment of which brings true joy. We do not live alone—in our city, our nation, or our world.

There is no dividing line between our prosperity and our neighbor’s wretchedness.

According to Mother Theresa “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”

Mother Theresa went further to expatiate thus: “I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, He will not ask, 'How many good things have you done in your life?' rather He will ask, 'How much love did you put into what you did?” So this Lions Year, we shall go forth serving and ‘strengthening our communities through diversity’.

MISSION
This year, our overall mission shall be: Promotion of a formidable District through dynamic leadership, operational inclusiveness and teamwork, and optimal service delivery with enhanced public visibility.

SERVICE PROGRAMMES

We have the following three main service programmes for the year, that is:

District Core Project

The District major focus this year will be on the Lions Ophthalmology Center at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife.

While the completion of the physical structure is receiving appropriate attention, we have commenced ground work towards the furnishing and equipping the facility as a Tertiary/Reference Center for all forms of ophthalmology services under Lions Clubs International (LCI) Sight First Program.

Global Service Framework

Lions new service framework focuses our efforts on five service areas: vision, hunger, the environment, pediatric cancer and diabetes. It gives Lions and Leos new ways to meet emerging humanitarian needs in their communities and around the world.

Others

We would also pursue other identified community need projects and activities that will ensure community satisfaction, ownership and sustainability.

PARTNERING:

We have you here in our mist gentlemen of the press to seek your cooperation and collaboration in the area of News coverage of all of our activities/projects.

In so doing many meaningful Nigerians will see and have better understanding of what we do as Lions and join us in building and impacting our environment positively.

CLOSING:

Humbly yours in Service.

Lion Wesley O. Kafidiya
