Alleged False Information: Lagos Socialite, Otunba Ashogbon, Arraigned

IGBOSERE, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA - a 57 year-old Lagos socialite, Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon, has been arraigned before a Lagos Chief Magistrate's Court, Igbosere, over alleged false information.

Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon was dragged before the court by the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 2, Onikan-Lagos in a charge designated L/51/2019.

In the charge, Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon was alleged to have committed the offence on November 12, 2015, at Are Avenue, off Sawyer Street, Dopemu, Lagos State.

Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon was particularly arraigned before Magistrate O. O. Otitoloju on a count charge of giving false information against one Remi Louis.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, M. Aruna is contrary to Section 85 and punishable under section 86(1) of the criminal laws of Lagos State, 2015.

But Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon pleaded not guilty to the charge, prompting his lawyer to inform the court that the charge against his client is a bailable one. 

The lawyer asked the court to grant Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon bail in liberal terms.

But the Police opposed Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon's bail application on the ground that it took the police a long time before he could be arrested and brought before the court.

In her ruling, Magistrate O. O. Otitoloju admitted Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to Magistrate O. O. Otitoloju must present to court evidence of three years tax paid to the Lagos State government, means of livelihood and must be residents of Lagos State.

Magistrate O. O. Otitoloju also ordered that all the bail conditions must be verified by the prosecutor.

Magistrate O.O Otitoioju in ordering that Otunba Olusegun Ashogbon be remanded in ikoyi Correctional Home, adjourned until November 4, 2019 for trial.
