#RevolutionNow: Orders For Immediate Release Of Sowore, Bakare Brazenly Disobeyed By State Security Service - FEMI FALANA

ABUJA,  NIGERIA - Fiery Lagos-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, on Sunday, declared that the State Security Service (SSS), have continued to disobey the orders of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, that the Convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, alongside his co-accused, Olawale Bakare be released immediately.

Femi Falana equally maintained that the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) would only obey orders made by foreign courts but disobey the ones issued by Nigerian courts.

Femi Falana particularly argued that since national security takes precedence over the rule of law in Nigeria, the SSS brazenly disobeyed the orders of the Federal High Court for the immediate release of Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare.

Femi Falana made reference to the FGN, obeying the order of a London court to pay the sum of £250,000 cost to a foreign firm, Process and Industrial Development, as condition to appeal a controversial $9.6bn judgment, in a hurry.

Femi Falana said: “The Federal Government has alleged that the controversial judgment debt of $9.6bn was obtained fraudulently by P & ID. But the commercial court in London recently ordered Nigeria to pay £250,000 within 14 days as a precondition for filing an appeal against the judgment.

“The said sum of £250,000 has since been paid to P & ID in strict compliance with the orders of Her Majesty’s High Court in London.

“But since national security takes precedence over the rule of law at home, the orders of the Federal High Court for the immediate release of Messrs Sowore and Bakare have been brazenly disobeyed by the State Security Service.”

It would be recalled that the warrants for the release of both Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare by the Federal High Court in Abuja was served on the Department of State Service (DSS) last week Thursday.

But the DSS, through its spokesperson, Peter Ifunaya, last week Friday, said Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare could not be released due to the failure of their lawyers to show up to receive them.

However in his response, Femi Falana insisted that lawyers from his team had waited in vain for hours to receive their clients from custody on Thursday.

Even, consequent upon the DSS showing the green light that it was going to comply with the orders of the court, defence lawyers, activists and supporters had arrived the DSS headquarters in Abuja at about 8am on Saturday.

But their wait ended up in futility after staying behind for hours.
